Becoming a Homeschooling Dad
Jesper Conrad didn’t get into homeschooling and unschooling because of a plan of his. He decided to try homeschooling because of a serious illness his wife developed and the need to provide care and support for her and their children at home while she was sick. In this interview, Jesper describes how his family became one of the first 10 families to homeschool in Denmark, to becoming a full-time traveling homeschooling family for seven years now, and how he and his family are organizing a Worldschooling Village event in Tarragona, Spain in October 2025.
The Conrads attend Worldschooling events as they travel but they felt the one-week Worldschooling event wasn’t enough and created this 4-week village experience. “It’s a way for us to create what wasn’t there, what our children missed,” says Jesper. “Instead of just looking for it we looked at each and said, “Maybe we should just create it.” And this is what we did…”
Jesper’s story is full of honest reflections and actions, such as: ““Focus on natural, not normal, because what is normal changes all the time…” and “I ruined my son’s love of reading. I asked my wife to teach him to read, speak Danish, and do math and I did not trust this weird thing, homeschooling. … I hope no other dad will make the same mistakes and that’s why I’m open about the mistakes I made…”
